BELTAINE '93

A loose sinopic life-size study of the
sacrificial victim Druid of Lindow Bog
and the 240 B.C. Dying Gaul.

Painted on May Day eve 1993, in
preparation for the paintings - and
mass suffering around the world
- due in the year ahead.

three ritual death blows and
strangulation of the Druid Lovernius.

Tri-chromatic colours mix through
the spectrum of mental energy of
Cuchulain released.

And Sarajevo besieged...

The smell of gas mask rubber and
Druid's arm totem under the
protection of a crusader Bible class.

Wartime prep school, flying bombs
and searching through bombsites
(then followed by an adolescent
conscription to National Service).

A tribute to the Basque peoples and
their right to Celtic recognition
and self government.

The Dying Gaul, stiffled in speech
and vision - thoughts and words
collaged with press media and bandages.

The artist born 25 days after
Guernica massacre.

Rawanda atrocities in 1993
- above Central American police
corruption in the nameof Catholicism
and the Modern World.

The Bog Man, crushed - a trinity
in which friend's friends are
not one's own friends.

A CHILD OF LLYR

Dedicated to the people of East Timor.

The Celtic legend of the stepmother
who turned the children of Llyr into
swans until liberated by St. Patrick.

The metamorphosis features gold leaf
as in the silver hand, the face golden
but downcast, as in the Dying Gaul.

DOMINICANAS !
(God Loves You, Dominicans!)

The phrase of Labour leader Juan Bosch,
while the artist was resident in
Dominican Republic during 1970.

Children dying in the sugar cane fields,
suppressed by non-Spanish-speaking
Haitian police, escaping Papa Doc.

by her own convictions.

Modern hectic living and the
sufferings within families.

Dedicated to my good friend
Geoff Wilson and his young family,
who bear the loss of a father
tragically killed in October '93
- Samian in the Celtic year.

MANANNAN LE PENDU

The Tarot 'Hung Man' becomes
Manannan McLir, God of Tir nan Og,
the Celtic otherworld at the
other end of the earth:
"His helmet shone like the sun."

The arm totem an inverted tricolour of
the 1944 French Resistance - crucified
by murderous French terrorists through
the sinking of the 'Rainbow Warrior'
in Auckland harbour.

366 - 2nd MAY 1994

Goya's Third of May 1814 - executions in
Madrid by Napoleonic forces - metres away
from where the artist later lived.

Completed the day before the
exhibition's opening in Whangarei
- a year and two days from Beltaine.

The same figures,the same killing,
the same suffering goes on and on...
